Natural Treatments for Your Pet’s Crusty Skin, Fleas, Ticks, and Mange

While pests like fleas and infestations like manage are ugly to look at (and think about!), they are part of this world too. The scarier part is that sometimes these plagues can be passed from our beloved pets to us – especially to sweet children who love to play and cuddle with our furry family members.

Whether your furry friend has mites/flea infestation or an infection due to injuries, antibiotics and skilled veterinary attention will help a lot!

Except, you may want to hurry.

Things like scabies are treatable when caught in time but can turn into a have-to-put-down situation when it gets worse.

There are some alternative treatments that I have used successfully when a) I was worried the furry one would get put down or b) the animal was not human friendly and the clinic wasn’t willing to take him on.

Disclaimer: I still heartily recommend the vet but
there are some things you can do in the meantime,
during (with vet approval), and after professional treatment.

These need to be repeated bi-weekly until about 2 weeks AFTER it looks like everything cleared up:

  • It’s Bathtime
This is a great kick-start if you can manage it! Commercial dips are chemically pre-designed to destroy any invaders – except a lot of us have concerns about exactly how much destruction is possible and prefer to use a gentle baby shampoo or even just plain water.

The longer the soak the better as the goal is to drown those pesky bugs.

  • Oooey, Gooey Oil
Some people have slathered used motor oil all over the furry body and rubbed it in good to drown the mites and lubricate the skin but I’d rather use non-toxic olive oil (or veggie oil).

  • Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar sponged on the furry one with a sponge or soaked paper towel (or preferably as a bath) helps. A bit of apple cider vinegar in the drinking water, can/moist food, or tuna juice, if possible. A soaked cotton ball can be used to dab the ears and other spots that you might be able to touch.

  • Diatomaceous Earth
Food grade D.E. rubbed in the fur and favorite lounging spots would probably be less stressful to all involved. As a bonus, it is a great way to control internal parasites, fleas, ticks, and other pests (but not heart worm as that is in the blood).

I used it to successfully eradicate hookworm in a part of a yard frequently used as a potty by stray dogs. (It looked suspicious for a while though, since it’s a fine white powder. Hahaha)

Can’t Catch or Touch ‘Em

Humane trap and take your extended furry family member to a clinic that is stray friendly.
A vet will not prescribe anything without seeing the pet in question but someone needs to get close enough to treat them either way.

There are a lot of possible things that could go wrong and it’s important to get them appropriate medical attention quickly.
