Would you believe that my automated DIY investment account has been working (and earning!) even though I have not actively managed or funded it since it was ShareBuilder?!
For reference, this was October 2002 – way before it became ING and now CapitalOne. Back when my soon-to-be 15-year old son was just a few months old. My data? Still there! My statements? Still there! My linked bank accounts? Still there!
Wait, what? I haven’t had those accounts in years! I quickly double-checked to make sure no charges or transfers to or from those accounts had been processed and then updated them.
Ironically, I had withdrawn everything I could from my ShareBuilder account to begin a closing process that I apparently never completed. The really tiny remaining balance has been reinvesting itself and is now not as tiny. Without any effort on my part.
Small Weekly Deposits, Big Long Term Returns
What would happen if I started actively funding my automated DIY investment accounts?
All automagically, while you play with your kids, nap, or sip on a delicious mocha latte at a Corner Bakery Cafe blogger MeetUp.
Granted, we may not all aspire to be millionaires – I just want to have the freedom to enjoy life with my kids – but as Dave Ramsey points out, we technically could, maybe, possibly have a chance to. With just $35 a week! If we do our homework, make a plan, and put the plan in motion.
So what exactly would happen if I actually started a set-it-and-forget-it investment strategy for me and my two kiddos? I’m planning to find out!
